COMPETENCY PALAVA

This was the trend over the radio and tv stations in Benin city today, as today happened to be the date for the long awaited competency test for teachers in Edo state. A visit to the venues of the test/screening exercise showed low turnout as the NUT in the state ordered a boycot as they claim, it was not in legal capacity of the state government to conduct an exam which was the constitutional right of the TRCN (teachers registration council of Nigeria). The head of secondary school teachers claimed it was teachers related to those in power that went for the exam. The big question is, what is the fate of those who boycotted the test?
In some quarters, it is claimed that the teacher avoided the test no out of fear of failing but basically due to trust issues for the government of the day. And it is on authoritative grounds that it has become a legal battle as the teachers had dragged the state government to court over the issue, which their council says a court injunction was issued to the state government to prevent them from conducting the purported test, which the government deny been served. This is not the last of the matter. What are your thoughts?
